The following workshop topics may be offered for heritage organisations in the New England and North West regions. If conducted as part of our Future for Regional Heritage Consultation process, they will be free one-hour workshops. Please contact us to discuss your needs if you’d like a more extensive session.
1. Disaster Preparedness for small archives, museums, and family collections – Julie McCarthy
The workshop aims to provide a brief overview of the cornerstones of disaster management: prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. It will provide some simple steps to help assist risk and be prepared for disasters.
2. Looking after your photographic collections – Julie McCarthy
A brief introduction to historic photographs and how to best store and care for them. We will also discuss digitisation as part of the preservation tool kit.
3. Care of paper-based collections – Julie McCarthy
Learn some simple techniques and tips for preserving your books, letters, prints and drawings, and other paper-based collections.
4. Researching and documenting historic clothing – Bronwyn Clarke
An introduction to the processes of dating historic clothing, and studying and documenting items of historic dress to discover their stories about the individuals who made and wore them.
5. Preserving and documenting your family treasures – Bronwyn Clarke
We all have family treasures – objects enriched with family history and memories. We’ll discuss some options for preserving and documenting those memories and their significance for future generations.
6. Trove – advanced research techniques and tools – Wayne Hoppe
Learn some tips and techniques for getting the best out of the amazing wealth of information on Trove.
7. Good governance for local heritage organisations – Wayne Hoppe
It is important that the boards act within the 4 principles of governance – accountability, transparency, fairness and responsibility. What does this mean for your not for profit group.
8. Publishing local and family histories – Wayne Hoppe and Bronwyn Clarke
Wayne will discuss the planning, research and writing necessary for a well-structured publication, and Bronwyn will introduce some of the newer formatting and publishing tools for independent publications.
